This week Hans and I had the opportunity to go to New York City where we stayed with the great people at Menno House in Manhattan. My cousin, Emma Gerig, was living there this summer and we wandered around the city with her on Thursday night.

We stumbled on a natural grocery store that had a huge selection of bottled teas, including several brands that are unique to New York. We just had to try them all, so we filled up two baskets with tea and brought them back to Menno House for taste testing. Other residents of Menno House participated in our poll, which revealed a strong preference for a half-lemonade, half-black tea mix. We’ll definitely be keeping a recipe like this in mind as a future possibility.

Thanks again to those at Menno House who so graciously put up with a long night of tea tasting!

On March 3rd, 2012, Everence hosted an event called “Stewardship University” in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. This one-day event provides various seminars on how we can all be better stewards. The seminar topics ranged from finances and banking to community building. I planned to attend in order to represent Menno Tea, but due to my being a part of the Goshen College Men’s Choir Tour, I was not able to come home for this wonderful event. So in a pinch, I called some of my friends from home (Lancaster, PA) who had helped with Menno Tea events in the past, and asked if they would be able to set up a table at Stewardship University in order to represent Menno Tea. After a few calls, and no luck, I decided to make a list of people I could call. As I started writing the list, I remembered that my mother, who makes Menno Tea at my home in the summer time, had said that she would be interested in helping with a Menno Tea event. So I called my parents and asked if they would be able to set up a table at Stewardship University. They said that they would love to help out, and so they started planning for the event.

The event was a success! Over 300 people attended Stewardship University, and many of them stopped by the Menno Tea table. Below is a photo of my mother behind the Menno Tea table at the event. Thanks again Mom and Dad for representing Menno Tea at Stewardship University.

It’s good to know that when you’re in a pinch, you can always count on your family.

Currently, Goshen College students are enjoying this abnormally warm winter during spring break by going to the beach, visiting family, taking a long bike ride, catching up on studies or by just relaxing. During this spring break, the Goshen College Men’s Choir is touring in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa. This is my second year in the choir. We have already performed five times, and will have two more performances before we head home to Goshen, IN. So far, the trip has been going really well. I’ve had great host families, and I’ve met a lot of warm and caring people. In Kansas City we were able to chow down on some local BBQ, and in Iowa City we were able to walk around downtown and experience the local culture.

If you would like to see pictures and read student blogs from our trip, simply click here.

While in Hesston, Kansas, we stopped by Goshen College’s sister school Hesston College. After we performed for their chapel service, we had free time to walk around their campus. Before making the trip to Hesston College, I was told by Niles that he had a friend who was selling Menno Tea out of his dorm room on Hesston’s campus. I was determined to find this room and meet whoever was putting time into spreading the word about Menno Tea. After asking around, I was able to find the room and meet the student retailer.

Below I have a attached a photo of the infamous dorm room and it’s occupant, Jesse. I apologize for the photo being blurry. Jesse Baer is the name of the student who is currently selling Menno Tea. Before that, John Swartley sold the tea out of his dorm room. Jesse and John, thanks for your support. It truly means a lot.

That’s all for now.

-Hans

Greetings from Peru! As part of Goshen College’s study abroad program, I’m spending a semester living with host families here while studying and doing service. This past week my group stayed at an orphanage near Lima and helped with several gardening projects. Prior to coming here to Lima, we were living in Cuzco and had the opportunity to visit Macchu Pichu.

This is the 7th GC study abroad trip that I’ve been on, but the first as a GC student, so I’m enjoying being a part of the group dynamic. We have 23 students and are being led by Jerrell Ross Richer (professor of Economics at Goshen) and his family. Despite the sometimes inefficient and unpredictable nature of business in Peru, everything has been going very smoothly thus far!

On the 25th we will all be heading off to different parts of the country to do service for 6 weeks. I will be heading to a town called Chanchamayo in the Amazon rainforest where I’ll be working for a company that produces and bottles organic juices and coffee. It should complement what we’re working on with Menno Tea, so I’m very excited to get started.

I brought along four bottles of Menno Tea (that, surprisingly, all made it safely in my luggage) as gifts for my host families here in Lima, Cuzco and Chanchamayo. I’ve had very positive feedback so far! Though, it will be a while before Menno Tea is available on the shelf here. I’m missing the fun and challenges of being involved in the everyday operations of Menno Tea, but it’s also great to take a sabbatical from it and try out a new perspective. Hans is keeping me well informed and I always look forward to getting updates.

All for now,

Niles
